In January of 2016, the Powerball Lottery hit a record high of $1.6 billion, and there were 3 winning tickets. With most big lottery winnings, friends and family of the winners try to claim they get some of the money, this happened with the Robinson family, who won a third of the $1.6 Billion.

The year 2016 was a leap year, this happens because the earth takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds to go completely around the sun. So an extra day needs to be added every four years to keep the seasons in order, the extra day that occurs on February 29th.

A 3-year-old child fell into a gorilla’s enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, the gorilla then grabbed the child and the gorilla was shot. This had a huge impact in today’s society because Harambe, the name of the gorilla, became an internet sensation with jokes and memes.

On June 12th, a man opened fire at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, it was one of the worst mass shootings that America has ever had, with more than 100 people being injured.  

The presidential election had many effects on 2016, and it was always in the news. One of the biggest events that happened during 2016 was Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the presidential campaign on November 8th.  
Also, on December 10th, Louisville sophomore quarterback, Lamar Jackson was the youngest player to win the Heisman Trophy. He is 19 years old.
