November 18, 1863- Lincoln Travels to Gettysburg

Abraham Lincoln left for Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to give his speech on the commitment of the soldiers killed there during July. Before leaving, Lincoln’s son, Tad, became sick and the President was afraid to leave him. When he arrived he was handed a telegram saying that his son was feeling better, which lifted his spirits. The speech Lincoln gave in Gettysburg became one of the most famous speeches in the U.S history.

November 18, 1966- Star Pitcher Retires

Los Angeles, Dodgers star pitcher, Sandy Koufax retired at the age of 30 years old. Unfortunately, the arthritis in his pitching arm grew too strong and he feared that if he continued to play baseball, he would no longer be able to use his left hand at all. Koufax ended his career by winning his third Cy Young award and leading his team to a National League pennant.

November 18, 1996- Man Sentenced For Smuggling Birds

Tony Silva was sentenced to serve seven years in prison without parole for leading a group in illegally smuggling parrots. Silva was not the only one arrested for this affair named ¨Operation Renegade.¨ Tony claimed that he was just trying to help the birds.

November 18, 2006- Cruise and Holmes Wed

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married in Italy with the attendance of some of their Hollywood friends including Will and Jada Smith, Brooke Shields, Jim Carrey, and Jennifer Lopez. Katie, who is 16 years younger than Tom, began publicly dating him in the spring of 2005. Seven months before they wed, they welcomed their daughter Suri. After more than five years of marriage, the couple decided to divorce in the summer of 2012.
